We aim to help protect and restore Arran's temperate rainforest for the benefit of our local community and the extended Scottish, UK and global communities both now and for future generations.
Temperate rainforest is an incredibly rare ecosystem worldwide and excitingly we have small pockets remaining here on the Isle of Arran. Also known as Atlantic or Celtic Temperate Rainforest, it occurs in areas with
• high humidity,
• high rainfall and
• a low variability in annual temperature,
• high oceanicity or influence of the sea.
It is a unique habitat with ancient trees including oak, ash, hazel, pine and birch, featuring diverse terrain with river gorges, steep sided crags and ravines alongside more open woodland and glades. It is quite stunning and charismatic, conjuring up images of the wild woods of long told stories and fables. Temperate rainforest is also home to some amazing and rare species of plants, animals, lichens and fungi.
We plan to protect, and hopefully purchase, land currently owned by 'Forestry and Land Scotland' which is already existing rainforest, and land alongside to protect and restore this rare ecosystem on Arran. We need your support - if you would like to keep up to date or join in with this project please get in touch.
